Community Spirit

Express Solicitors is proud to support a diverse rang of charities and good causes. As a specialist personal injury firm, we donate to charities relevant to the types of cases we work on, such as Headway - the brain injury association.

Other charities and causes close to our employees' hearts are also supported, and the firm does this in a variety of ways.

Dress down days, silly-hat wearing days, charity runs, and cycle rides have all been used recently to raise money for worthy causes, and money raised by staff is regularly matched by the firm to bolster the coffers of the appeal in question.

SOS - Slippers Or Socks Day In Aid Of RNLI

To celebrate National RNLI day, our monthly dress down day was in aid of the fantastic lifeboat charity. It's an organisation close to many of our hearts as there are a fair few sailing enthusiasts at Express Solicitors. The theme was a Slippers or Socks day, a fun variation on the S.O.S distress call. As always, a great amount was donated by the staff which was then matched bu the partners. The cash will hopefully go a small way to keeping our coastlines safe. It's little known that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a charity and receives no government funding whatsoever, instead relying on the genorosity of public and industry to sustain what many consider to be our 'fourth emergency service'.

Dress Down Day - Manchester Children's Hospital / Children In Need

Manchester Children's Hospital and Children In Need will be the joint beneficiaries of Express Solicitors' first dress down day of 2012. With a recent recruitment drive, he firm looks to secure record amounts for nominated charities this year. All donations to these two charities - both of which do fantastic work for young people locally and nationally - will be matched by the partners.

Christmas Raffle in aid of Manchester Children's Hospital / Barnabus homeless charity

Express Solicitors remained open for business right up until Christmas Eve afternoon in 2011, meaing there was precious little shopping time for our traditional Secret Santa event. Instead, a raffle was organised giving staff members a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Ticket sales raised a few hundred pounds which was then matched by the partners before being evenly distributed between two charities. One was Manchester Children's Hospital which does exactly what it says on the tin by caring for some of the poorliest children in Manchester. And the other was Barnubus, a fantastic charity which helps the homeless who are also based in Manchester.

Dress Down Day - Lupus UK

Our regular dress down day for November 2011 was in aid of Lupus UK, the only charity supporting those with systemic lupus and discoid lupus and assisting those approaching diagnosis. They are active in fundraising and educational programmes throughout the country, with a slogan of 'better understanding of Lupus begins with you'. All employees wore their own clothes to work, making a cash donation for the privilege which was then matched by the firm.

BASIC Ball 2011

Several partners and management staff from Express Solicitors attended The Chequered Ball, a fundraising event for BASIC, in November 2011. Taking a table at The Point venue inside Lancashire County Cricket Club, they and 400 guests enjoyed a fabulous night raising valuable funds for the Brain and Spinal Injury Charity.

Based in Salford, they help patients and their families on a local and national scale, providing care and support once a patient has left hospital. Ticket purchases and charity purchases on the night helped raise funds so that BASIC can carry on with the great work that they do.

Partners Daniel Slade (left) and James Maxey attend the 2011 BASIC Ball with their partners.

Jeans For Genes Day 2011

In October, Express Solicitors participated in Jeans for Genes Day, a national fundraising event in aid of children who suffer from genetic disorders, 30,000 of which children are born every year in the UK. By wearing their favourite denims to work, staff were able to contribute to funding for the care and support of these children and their families, as well as helping fund continued research into genetics and the development of effective treatment and cures.  The list of charities which Jeans For Genes Day 2011 will help can be found here.

Dress Down Day - The Stroke Association

September 2011's dress down day raised valuable funds for The Stroke Association, the only UK-wide charity solely concerned with aiding stroke victims of all ages and their families. All money raised was matched by the firm, and will go a little way to helping The Stroke Association continue their fantastic work in areas of research, fundraising and education.

Express Solicitors Take To The Streets For Charity

It seems a fair few of us at Express Solicitors have caught the running bug! And while exercise is a positive activity in itself, it’s even better when it raises money for good causes. This month, if you’re feeling in a charitable mood then please consider donating to one of our runners’ charity appeals below:

Victoria Oakley, a Trainee Solicitor in the Medical Negligence Department, is running in the Cardiff Half-Marathon in aid of St. David’s Hospice. It’s a fantastic institution which provides care for individuals who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.

Sapna Kapoor, an Employer’s Liability Litigation Executive, is taking part in the Run To The Beat London race, another 13 mile affair. Dress Down Day - Penine Acute Hospitals Charity

The Penine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust provides high quality general and specialist hospital treatment to 800,000 residents in Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and north Manchester. Currently, their charity is looking to raise £200,000 for part of the £44million women and children unit which is currently under construction, due to open December 2012. Express Solicitors held a dress down day, with staff making donations to the charity for the privilege of wearing their own clothes.

Sponsorship Of England Lacrosse Player John Beadle

Express Solicitors was proud to sponsor John Beadle, a member of the England team that recently competed at the 2011 Indoor Lacrosse World Cup. Beadle's number 8 shirt bore the firm's name throughout the competition, in which England finished a very respectable fifth place. As an amatuer sport, players rely on sponsorship to cover flights, equipment, insurance and various other expenses.

Dress Down Day for Treehouse

For the latest in a regular series of charity dress down days, Expres Solicitors staff donated money to the Treehouse charity in exchange for being able to wear casual clothes in the office. Treehouse works tirelessly to improve the lives of children diagnosed with autism, as well as their families and carers. They provide invaluable services to all parties, and raise awareness and understanding of autism.  All donations made by staff were matched by the firm.

Dress Down Day for St. Ann's Hospice

Since 1971, St. Ann's Hospice has been providing first class care to cancer suffers and their families across Manchester. They currently care for and assist around 3,000 people each year across their three sites in the city, as well as in people's own homes. To do this, they must employ around 400 members of staff and rely on the kindness of about 800 volunteers. To provide this valuable service - which is free of charge - they must raise approximately £16,000 each day. Express Solicitors made a small contribution towards this when staff made cash donations to St. Ann's Hospice for the priviledge of wearing their own clothes to work.

Dress Down Day for Japan Relief Fund

The recent events in Japan shocked the world, with terrible scenes of death and destruction relayed through news programes and papers. In order to raise money for the relief fund, we held a dress down day where staff donated money which was then in turn matched by the partners.

Comic Relief - Red Clothes and Red Noses

Red Nose Day 2011 was a massive success, raising over £73million pounds for Comic Relief. Millions tuned in to watch the ever-popular "Smithy" and a host of celebrities doing their bit for poor and vulnerable people across the UK and Africa. As well as the top-notch comedy, there were excellent short films detailing the good causes helped by Comic Relief money.

Here at Express Solicitors, staff were encouraged to wear not just red noses, but as much red clothing as possible. Cash donations  were made for the priveledge, with the final amount being matched by the firm. One employee stood head and shoulders above the rest in terms the amount of red she managed to wear on Red Nose Day, and won a box of chocolates.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution - Dress Down Day

February 2011 - Since its inception in 1824, the RNLI has worked tirelessly to save hundreds of lives every year in British waters. They provide a round-the-clock, year-long search and rescue service along the coasts of the UK and Ireland, manned by some 4,500 volunteers. Come the summer months, they also provide a lifeguard service along the nation's busiest beaches. With many of the solicitors here at Express being keen boat enthusiasts - Managing Partner James Maxey and solicitor Laura Edgeley to name but two - this was a popular choice for a fund-raising dress down day. The money raised by staff was matched by the firm

James Bond Charity Gala In Aid Of Derian House Children's Hospice

Partners Robin Patey and Daniel Slade recently attended a James bond Gala ball at the De Vere White’s Hotel at The Reebok Stadium, Bolton. A thrilling time was had by all, as a fantastic evening of live music, dancing and dinner was laid on. There was even an opportunity to chance one’s arm with a game of roulette or black jack at Casino Royal, as well as opportunities to have pictures taken in some of 007’s famous cars.

Suffice to say, the dress code was strictly dinner jackets and bowties, and quite a few Vespa Martini’s were consumed! All in all, it was a lot of fun and you can check how Daniel (left) and Robin (centre) scrubbed up in the photo below.

There was a serious side to the event though, as it was a fundraiser for Derian House Children’s Hospice. They provide invaluable care for terminally ill children and their families, ensuring that children whose lives have been tragically cut short can lead as full and comfortable a life as possible.

While Bond may be many people’s idea of the ultimate action hero, in reality it’s the staff at places like Derian House who are the real heroes, giving essential support, medical assistantance and fun and laughter to those children who need it most. More details on the work they do can be found here.

Sense - Dress Down Day

Jan 2011 - Sense is a national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind. They provide advice, information and specialist services to deafblind people, their families, carers and the professionals who work with them. A dress down day was organised to raise funds and donations were collected and matched by the firm. January's "charity of the month" was suggested by one of our employees.

Treehouse - Christmas card donations

December 2010 - In December, many Express staff members opted to forgo sending Christmas cards to colleagues, and instead make a donation to The Treehouse Trust. TreeHouse is the national charity for autism education, based in north London and founded in 1997 by a group of parents whose children had recently been diagnosed with severe autism. TreeHouse was established in response to the huge unmet national need for specialist education for children with autism.

Poppy Appeal - Dress Down Day

November 2010 - The British Legion supports serving and ex-Service personnel - not just those who fought in the two World Wars, but also those involved in the many conflicts since 1945 and those still fighting today. Its annual Poppy Appeal gives an opportunity to raise awareness and much-needed funds to support serving and ex-Service personnel and their families.

British Heart Foundation - Dress Down Day

October 2010 - The British Heart Foundation is committed to preventing premature death from heart disease through pioneering research, vital prevention activity and ensuring quality care and support for everyone living with heart disease. A dress down day was organised to raise funds and donations were collected and matched by the firm.

Marie Curie - Dress Down Day

September 2010 - Marie Curie Cancer Care provides care to terminally ill patients in their own homes or dedicated hospices, as well as educating the public on the symptoms and treatment of cancer. A dress down day was organised to raise funds and donations were collected and matched by the firm to support a charity very close to the heart of one of our lawyers.

Action Medical Research – Dress Down Day

July 2010 - Action Medical Research is the UK’s leading medical research charity dedicated to helping babies and children. They strive to reduce premature birth, pregnancy complications and infections in vulnerable children, as well as helping children and their families who are disabled, infected or suffer from rare conditions. A dress down day was organised to raise funds and donations were collected and matched by the firm, who is proud to support such an important charity.

The Genesis Appeal – Dress Down Day

June 2010 - Express Solicitors a recent mufti day in aid of The Genesis Appeal, the only charity in the UK dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. 1 in 10 women, and 1 in 1000 men will contract the disease at some point in their lives, so prevention is clearly important. Yet, only 2% of all breast cancer research funding is spent on prevention, so The Genesis Appeal seeks to redress that balance. Staff at Express Solicitors were encouraged to wear their own clothes for a day, making a donation to the appeal for the privilege. Donations were matched by the firm, and a fantastic total was raised.

Hats For Headway

May 2010 - Express Solicitors had a lot of fun participating in its first 'Hats for Headway' day. Come 8:30am, employees turned up for work in some rather outrageous head gear (see photographs!). A cash donation was paid to the Headway charity by all participants.

While it was a fun day, the reason for doing it was totally serious. Headway is a charity concerned with helping and supporting people who are affected by brain injury. They do this in many different ways, chiefly by running rehabilitation programmes at their UK centres, supporting carers of brain injury patients and by helping patients reintegrate into society.

As well as this, they lobby for better support and resources for those affected, and promote better understanding of brain injuries and their implications through running a helpline and publishing information leaflets. All in all, they do a fantastic job for those affected by this most serious of conditions. Click here to see videos about the great work Headway does.

A fantastic amount of money was raised, and this was matched by the firm. Honourable mentions go to lawyers who turned up for work in trilbies and secretarial staff wearing santa hats (in May!).

Rumours of Express Solicitors participating in future ‘Pants for PETA’ and ‘Birthday-suit for Barnardos’ charity days are, as of yet, unconfirmed...

Local Football Team Sponsorship

Express Solicitors is the proud sponsor of two football teams.

Atlético Chorlton FC were established in 2006 and play in the Manchester Amateur Sunday League. The team finished a respectable 3rd in the 2009/10 season, and will be hoping for continued success next season with the Express Solicitors logo emblazoned across their “Dutch-style” orange home kit.

Fletcher Moss Rangers FC U-16s have two teams – ‘blue’ managed by Tony Taylor and ‘yellow’ managed by Jerome Tait. 2009/10 was a highly successful season, as both ‘blues’ and ‘yellows’ reached the cup final in May and were pitted against one another!

The shirt sponsorship of both Atlético Chorlton and Fletcher Moss Rangers U-16s brings in valuable revenue to the clubs, facilitating the purchase of kit, training pitch hire and equipment.

Helen Edwards Completes Charity Bike Ride

There are many sporting individuals amongst the ranks here at Express Solicitors, with cycle rides and long-distance runs undertaken to raise money for charities. Recently, Helen Edwards participated in a gruelling ride in support of two charities: Help For Heroes and Breast Cancer Research. The yellow shirted riders made it all the way from Gretna Green to Westhoughton near Bolton, and the total raised to date is £10,000. Managing to still be smiling, she's pictured second from the left on the back row.

Vicky McLean visits Bolton Royal Infirmary

The work of doctors and nurses at Bolton Royal Infirmary is particularly close to one Express Solicitors employee’s heart. Both of Vicky McLean’s children were born dangerously premature, but both Harry and Olivia survived thanks to the efforts of staff at the hospital.

Having witnessed at first hand the tough time kids on children’s ward B2 have of it, Vicky returned to the hospital this Easter to try and bring a little bit of joy to the residents. A sponsored ‘dress down Friday’ was organised by Express, who matched pound-for-pound donations by staff members.

Over one hundred chocolate Easter eggs were purchased with the proceeds raised, and Vicky distributed them amongst the kids on the ward. Of course, very sick children need the medicines and expert care that only a top hospital like Bolton can provide. . . but at the end of the day they are still children who like scoffing chocolate like the rest of us!

As well as the above, Express Solicitors has helped a long list of diverse charities in recent years, including:
