The AA recently carried out a
survey of 19,000 of its members, looking at people's knowledge regarding their responsibilities when supervising a learner driver.
The results are rather alarming, with very few respondents realising the law states that the qualified driver is effectively in control of the car, despite being sat in the passenger seat.
1 in 10 Drivers Believed It Was Legal To Sleep While Supervising Learners
Some of the things to come out of the survey would be laughable were they not so dangerous, a case in point being that 9% of respondents didn't realise that falling asleep while supervising a novice driver was illegal.
Likewise, some drivers believed that the drink-driving limit did not apply to those 'merely' supervising learner drivers. AA chief Edmund King cited the tragic example of a learner driver who crashed, killing two people while under the supervision of a qualified yet intoxicated driver. The supervisor was deemed responsible and sent to jail.
Lessons with family and friends can be a useful addition to more formal driving tuition, helping a novice driver gain confidence and experience on the road that will not only help them pass their test, but also to be a safer driver once they have got their license.
Yet, it's essential that all driving tuition is safe - not just for the duration of the lesson but also so that driver's bad habits are not passed on to new drivers.
